The MegaStores, located in the Haagse Laakhaven close to Holland Spoor, currently has a lot of vacancy and the accessibility and recognition is poor. In order to improve accessibility and quality of stay, HS Retail decided in 2016 to thoroughly adapt and expand the centre. A new entrance on the Van der Kunplein and a new main entrance on the Leeghwaterplein provide more visibility. The existing main entrance on Waldorpstraat will be renewed and made more recognisable. At right-angled to the Leeghwaterplein, from roof level, will be a residential tower with 160 dwellings of approximately 75 sqm.
GROUP A is responsible for both the design of the redevelopment of the district centre and the construction of the adjacent residential tower and the new main entrance. The (re)design of Leeghwaterplein and Van der Kunplein, including parking, are also part of this fantastic task and give GROUP A the opportunity to operate integrally at all levels of scale.
The new city entrance to Laakhaven is created by the development of the corner plot Leeghwaterplein / Van der Kunstraat and will contribute to the new appearance of the MegaStores. This main entrance fits in with the range of shops and leisure facilities in the new building, with catering and retail on the lower floors and leisure – such as Jump XL and a Kids island playground – above. At right angles to Leeghwaterplein, from roof level, will be a residential tower with 160 homes of approximately 75 sqm. The plinth and residential tower have been designed as one unit, in which the complementary programmes will reinforce each other. The residential tower marks the new main entrance and forms a beacon for the renovated MegaStores.
