Amsterdam trip GROUP A
With the AkzoNobel Global Centre nearing completion and the Hoofdloods and Hotel on the NDSM wharf already in use we thought it was a good opportunity to organise an office trip to Amsterdam on May 21.
We started the warm and sunny day at AkzoNobel on the Amsterdam Zuidas. Unfortunately entering the building site was not allowed, as it is too dangerous to walk around during working hours. From close distance we could see a lot of detail and Folkert, our enthusiastic project architect, explained the process, choice of materials, etc.
In December, when the building will be completed, we will return to admire the beautiful curved glass panels with the timber details and of course all the other sophisticated details. It was really impressive to see what our ‘Akzo team’ is doing!
From the Zuidas we moved on to the NDSM wharf. GROUP A was appointed for the design of the redevelopment of De Smederij. It’s new appearance still provides visitors with a sense of the original industrial atmosphere and activities. After drinks on the terrace of the Double Tree Hilton Hotel the owner presented us with an inside tour. He explained the concept of the hotel and how pleased they are with the redevelopment. Also we were allowed to visit one of the hotel rooms. Modest rooms with a stunning view across the IJ.
Subsequently, neighbouring Greenpeace welcomed us to their new offices. The monumental steel structure from the former forge and shed is a prominent and impressive feature in the hallway. The interior by Hollandse Nieuwe architecten has been designed according to the Greenpeace standards: certified timber, re-used products, bamboo flooring, energy saving lighting, etc. With the New Ways of Work implemented in a creative way, staff can even choose to work sitting on a porch swing.
