The Hembrug site is unique for the Netherlands, where the Ministry of Defence took care of the production and storage of ammunition for almost 100 years. This has led to an “industrial landscape”. Now the Hembrug area is being transformed into a mixed living and working area, where the qualities of the industrial landscape are the guiding principle. GROUP A, in collaboration with BURA urbanism and Strootman Landschapsarchitecten, is working on the urban characterisation document for new and existing buildings and public space of the Hembrug terrain.
The concept is based on the reallocation of a variety of buildings. So not only the gems – the national monuments – but also the idiosyncratic buildings from the 1970s are given a second life. In this way a special sample is created, with architecture throughout the years.
The urban development plan – by marco.broekman – offers space for a total of 180,000 sqm of program, with approximately 1000 homes, creative industry, schools, co-working, art & culture, offices and catering. By preserving the important historical buildings and landscape structures, the unique character of Hembrug will be preserved and strengthened.
