Carbon Stories: Paris Proof station, station district and beyond
Hoe kunnen stations bijdragen aan een CO₂-arme toekomst? Tijdens deze editie van Carbon Stories staat de stap van het Paris Proof station naar het Paris Proof stationsgebied centraal.
Recent onderzoek van ProRail, NS, Bureau Spoorbouwmeester en GROUP A laat zien dat stations binnen de Paris Proof-grenzen ontworpen kunnen worden, mits CO₂-reductie vanaf de eerste ontwerpfase integraal wordt meegenomen.
Tegelijkertijd blijkt dat de grootste klimaatwinst mogelijk niet in het station zelf ligt, maar in de ontwikkeling van het stationsgebied als aanjager van duurzame mobiliteit, verdichting en de 15-minutenstad. Deze bredere benadering wordt verder onderzocht binnen het TU Delft CARB HUB-onderzoek (Climate-Adaptive Resilient and Balanced Mobility Hubs), onder leiding van Manuela Triggianese en Halina Veloso e Zarate.
Samen met onderzoekers en experts verkennen we hoe stationsgebieden kunnen uitgroeien tot katalysatoren voor een CO₂-arme stedelijke ontwikkeling en welke gevolgen dit heeft voor de toekomstige ruimtelijke ontwikkeling van Nederland. Meld je nu aan!

Bio’s
Daan Zandbelt (Spoorbouwmeester)
Daan Zandbelt graduated from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) as an architect and urban planner. He is currently a partner at De Zwarte Hond, an architecture, urban planning and strategy firm with more than 100 employees and offices in Rotterdam, Groningen, Cologne and Berlin.
Based in Rotterdam, Daan works on complex urban projects, ranging from regional strategies and urban development plans to the design of large-scale metropolitan buildings. In addition, he serves as Spoorbouwmeester, overseeing the quality of railway stations throughout the Netherlands and advising ProRail, NS and their partners. Key priorities in this role include Stations & Urbanisation and improving social safety in and around stations for women and girls.
From 2016 to 2020, Daan was a government advisor on the physical living environment and a member of the College van Rijksadviseurs (CRa), the Board of Government Advisors. The CRa advises the government and its partners on spatial and urban development issues.
Manuela Triggianese (TU-Delft CARB HUB)
Manuela Triggianese is an Associate Professor at TU Delft. Trained as an architect in Italy and the Netherlands, she holds a PhD from IUAV and has held research positions at Beijing University of Technology and the AMS Institute. Her research advances transdisciplinary design, using the architecture of mobility – stations – as a testbed to investigate the role of design in a multi-stakeholder context, through collaborative processes, computational approaches, and knowledge representation and visualization. She is leading the NWO-founded projects CARB-HUB and Walk-In, using co-creation approaches in architectural practice together with professionals.
Halina Veloso e Zarate (TU-Delft CARB HUB)
Halina is an architect and urbanist working at the intersection of data, sustainability, and design. She holds degrees from the Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás and UCLA, and has worked at Morphosis/Now Institute, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and MVRDV. She completed a PhD, Carbon Data as Design Material, at TU Delft. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher on the NWO CARB-HUB project and contributes to systematizing the sustainability and artificial intelligence initiative at KAAN Architecten.
Frank van Schadewijk (Programme Strategist Climate Neutral and Circular Infrastructure (KCI) at ProRail)
Frank van Schadewijk is Programme Strategist Climate Neutral and Circular Infrastructure (KCI) at ProRail, where he connects the 2030 carbon and circularity targets to the daily practice of asset management, procurement and projects. High-value reuse and the Environmental Cost Indicator (MKI) in the design phase are his main levers. For ProRail’s stations he introduced MKI and CO₂ ceiling values in the design standards, an approach that now guides station design from the earliest stages, and worked with Bureau Spoorbouwmeester and GROUP A on the Paris Proof Stations research by design. He trained as an architect at TU Delft, ran his own practice as architect and contractor in circular housing, and set up ProRail’s crowd flow data science team.
Paul Chorus (Team Senior Public Transport Hubs Province of Noord-Holland)
University of Amsterdam and University of Tokyo. Paul has been involved in transit-oriented development in a range of roles: In the real estate department of Dutch Railways (NS), at Movares, and currently as policy advisor for the province of Noord Holland. Paul advises the commissioner for town planning regarding the role he should/could take regarding the implementation of TOD in the province of North Holland. A common theme throughout Paul’s career is his PhD-research which focused on the driving factors behind station area development projects in Tokyo and their (possible) implementation in the Randstad (urbanized area in the western part of the Netherlands comprising the four largest cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht).
Willem van Genugten (Sustainable Business Developer GROUP A, initiator thinktank Carbonlab)
Willem van Genugten is architect (TU Delft and University of Illinois Chicago) and Sustainable Business Developer at GROUP A where he initiated thinktank Carbonlab. The lab researches CO2 reduction in the built environment and translates this knowledge into design strategies and tangible design solutions. By connecting decarbonization knowledge and networks he actively accelerates the transition towards a Paris Proof construction industry.
